The German-Russian relations are tarnished, now the Chancellor meets the Russian President in Moscow. After that, Merkel wants to travel to Ukraine.
Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) will travel to Moscow Friday next week and meet Russian President Vladimir Putin there. Government spokesman Steffen Seibert announced this. The Kremlin confirmed the meeting of the two heads of government.
Relations between Germany and Russia are tense because of several conflicts, such as the imprisonment of the oppositionist Alexej Navalny. Russia also considers itself wrongly accused of the murder of a Georgian in Berlin and a hacking attack on the Bundestag in 2015.
After visiting the Russian capital, the Chancellor’s trip to Ukraine is also planned for Sunday next week. The Ukrainian government announced its visit to Kiev on Monday. It will probably be the last time that Merkel will travel to Russia and Ukraine as Chancellor.
