The USA threatens Russia with consequences in the case of Alexei Navalny’s death
The state of health of the Russian opposition is currently considered critical. Should he die, the US government wants to reserve “specific measures” for itself.
The US government has threatened Russia with consequences if the imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny dies in prison. “We have informed the Russian government that what happens to Mr Navalny in their custody is their responsibility,” said US President Joe Biden’s National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, on CNN. “There will be ramifications if Mr Navalny bites the dust.” He does not want to publicly speak about possible specific measures against Russia in such a case.
Doctors from Nawalny’s environment warned at the weekend that the 44-year-old’s heart could stop. Navalny has been on a hunger strike for over about fourteen days.
Sullivan denied criticism that Biden failed to address the Navalny case in his address to Russia on Thursday. It has been reasoned that for this situation, it is better to communicate “through diplomatic channels directly with the highest level of the Russian government” than to make public statements, Sullivan said.
The French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian also did not rule out consequences. Measures have already been taken; he told France 3 broadcaster. The sanctions package was already significant, but there could be more.
